Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for stopping by my website. The best way to stay up to speed on new gigs, music and more is by joining my mailing list. My music life Is weird because I've spent much of my life performing my own songs and performing all over the place doing that. I began doing the songs of the country supergroup the Highwaymen a few years back and that kinda randomly mushroomed into allowing me to be a full-time musician (although I assure you that's perpetually tenuous : ) This website is more focused on my music but has a lot of info on the Highwaymen, Cash, Willie, gospel stuff as well. However, www.mattyorksongsandstories.com is completely dedicated to it. I live in Southeastern Massachusetts. I travel all over New England regularly and go further outside the area periodically. If you have any questions about booking, please feel free to fill out the contact form or email me directly at mattyorkpembroke@gmail.com. I am a one-man shop over there.
Thank you!

Welcome

June and beyond

The new single "Going Crazy" is out now. You can listen to it here (or click on the picture below). The album itself will come out in early August.

I'm back in action with a pair of shows in June. First up, I'm at the Bridgewater Music Alley opening for Will Dailey on Thursday, June 27th at 5 p.m. This is a a free outdoor show.

On Saturday, June 29th, I'll be opening up for the awesome Christine Ohlman on Saturday, June 29th at The Knickerbocker Music Center in beautiful Westerly, Rhode Island. For more info and/or to purchase advanced tickets, click here.

Some advance praise for the new album “Bruisable Heart”

Velvety - After two successful albums, Boston, Texas (2016) and Between The Bars (2017), the Boston composer and singer Matt York returns with his talented alternative country proposal and a new album, Bruisable Heart (2019), from which he shares another gem of the genre, Permanent Crush , a hymn for the working class with echoes of Bruce Springsteen or Townes Van Zandt that adds to its lyrical sense a powerful acoustic melody, as well as an honest and irreproachable attitude.

Global Texas Chronicles – With the haunting and eager lyric sensibilities of Noel Gallagher’s “Wonderwall” and delivered in an earnest timeless alt-country vocal. Produced by Thomas Wenzl, this track finds York at his best. Edging ever closer to the heights of songwriters like Lukas Nelson and Justin Townes Earle. If you’re into distinctive song construction, this is for you.

The Lowell Spin – It has to be asked: Why hasn’t UML alum Matt York taken off on a national scale in the same way that less compelling singer-songwriters have? (Looking at you, Ed Sheeran.) His latest single, “Permanent Crush” is the former of the two, with just a little bit of Bruce Springsteen working class flavor sprinkled atop. It’s a regular Joe folk rock anthem that’s not much seen in modern music anymore, with anthemic bar-singalong guitars, a shuffling fall dance beat, and York’s own husky vocals, which harkens to the likes of Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, and just a little bit of Brian Fallon of The Gaslight Anthem. An acoustic ditty that’s got a bit more punch than your average campfire singalong, short and simple, but sweet and solemn in that simplicity.

Americana UK – “A gutsy roots-rocker”

GigSoup - Boston’s Matt York writes the kind of songs that feel like they’ve been a part of your life forever. With a comfortingly familiar, rootsy sound steeped in Alt Country and the kind of loose-but-sincere 80s indie rock that The Replacements made famous, he’s been picking up plaudits for his albums and playing live all over the USA.

Vanyaland - The Boston musician’s latest track, a chilling acoustic number dealing in stone cold honesty about the struggles of addiction, is a stark reminder of our current epidemic.

Worcester Telegram – It’s a lot to process, in a lot of ways, but York’s simple, heartfelt melody carries with it so much heartache that it’s hard not to be moved.

Spring update

Have you been interested in hearing me do that music thing I do, but wish you could just watch me do it on PBS instead of traveling to some club or small theater? Well friends.... that opportunity has arrived. I had the chance to chat w/ the awesome Brick Briscoe for his new TV show Any Road TV along with a few other Boston performers (Abbie Barrett, Nate Leavitt and Dan Nicklin). I'm on at the 15 minute mark but I really enjoyed the whole episode, it was a lot of fun to be a part of. You just click on the picture below to watch it.

I'm looking forward to returning to The Outlaw Roadshow this coming Saturday, April 27th at Exhibit A Brewing Company in Framingham, Massachusetts. For more info on the show, click the sign below.

Had a couple of nice write-ups this month regarding the new single "Permanent Crush", including one from Spain. I don't speak Spanish, so I'm just assuming that when I read the words Bruce Springsteen and Townes Van Zandt, they were comparing me favorably to those people. If you speak Spanish and they weren't saying that, lets just keep that to your self : ) You can figure that out by clicking here

There's also a premiere of "Permanent Crush" in Vents Magazine that you can read here.

Not sure a lot of shows in May/early June but a couple of things that will likely be added soon. If you haven't had a chance, please check out my new single wherever you stream music at this link.

Thanks for stopping by!
